This sentance is false

There is another one.

^ D:
Clearly, human language (and perhaps logic as
well) is flawed to be able to produce such paradoxes.
Saturday, Jun 20th, 2009 5:30 PM
Actually, the self-referential nature of modern mathematics
and logic is a strength, not a weakness. The occasional
paradox is a minor side effect of a very powerful formal
system. See Douglas Hofstadter's Godel, Escher, Bach: The
Eternal Golden Braid.

Also, the paradox in the picture can be resolved if we accept
that future-tensed statements have no inherent truth-value,
since all predictions of the future can only become true, and
are not definitively true until reality is changed and the claim is
then made retroactively true. Google "The Bridge Paradox".

^ You are officially my favorite lolbot commenter.
I'll have to read up on the bridge paradox later.

Wikipedia strikes again.

in simple english: his nose will grow later
because he lied.
Monday, Jun 22nd, 2009 7:46 AM
Hang on, this wont happen anyway...

Pinocchio isnt real.
Monday, Jun 22nd, 2009 11:25 AM
The only winning move is not to play.
Monday, Jun 22nd, 2009 12:38 PM
Unless you play and win. Then thats a winning
move. But you have to win in one move, so if its
chess you just smash his head with a chair.

Unless its a girl, in which case you smash HER
head with a chair.

supposed to pull that one off?

There is, however, the fact that Pinocchio said
"My nose will grow _now_", which represents that
it is not a future-tense statement and thus
represents that 'The Bridge Paradox' is not a
suitable analogy. The best analogy for a situation
such as this is dividing by zero.
Sunday, Jul 19th, 2009 10:41 PM
^ "my nose _will_ grow ..." implies future tense.
Sunday, Jul 19th, 2009 10:42 PM
^ ^ in clearer words, what he means is "my nose
will grow when I finish this sentence." which
doesn't happen until alfter he says the sentence.
future. bridge paradox applies. BAM
Monday, Jul 20th, 2009 12:57 AM
^&^ ^ He clearly says 'now' and not 'when I finish
this sentence'. Even if he did say 'when I finish
this sentence', he wouldn't have finished his
sentence and, thus, would not have yet lied. He
would have lied as soon as he finished the
sentence, which is when he finished saying now.
Technically, we are both correct, however it
doesn't matter what he means, it matters what he says.

^ You stated 'what he means is "my nose
will grow when I finish this sentence." which
doesn't happen until alfter he says the sentence.'
How the phuck does that work? How can you finish a
sentence AFTER you complete the act of saying it?
The two events are simultaneous. Thus, I am the
winner. BAM

P.S. Do not refute my logic, for my logic is
larger than the largest phallus, see? (Only a
grammar/monologue nut would understand that one)

^
If you think of it that way, if the nose grows
after he says 'now', then there really isn't a
paradox.. He would have lied as soon as he
finished the sentence.. not when he says 'now',
right after.
I'd go with the Brigde...
Monday, Jul 20th, 2009 12:42 PM
Well, I've never heard of a Brigde, so good luck
with that.

Hello all. It's me, the original Bridge Paradox
commenter. While some of you have tried to make
some nice little philosophical sleight-of-hand
tricks, you've all forgotten to LRN2GRAMMAR!!

Tense only applies to the verb of the sentence, so
the tense of the sentence is necessarily future,
since the verb phrase is "will grow". Therefore
the sentence is, definitively, future-tensed, and
the Bridge Paradox analogy applies.

Well, you also have to take into account the
adverb which, in this case, is 'now'; this means
that I, the original bridge paradox commenter
falsifier, am correct and my proof is up-held.

What exactly makes this paradox epic?
Saturday, Nov 14th, 2009 1:03 PM
You will deny this statement.

I don't know about the paradox, but the best way
to interrogate Pinocchio would be to hold his nose
in front of an automatic pencil sharpener.
